a discussion ...

hello dear friends ..
loooooooong time .. no see .. :)
looks like i'm gonna be back to the blogging world again, yet (qare7te) hasn't been mended yet ..

anyway, today, i was discussing with a fellow teacher in the school,
not being judgmental here, but he is the only teacher you can make a human conversation with .. :s
we'll, starting from a question written in the exam we were watching the students in ..
following the process of exchanging knowledge about where water (H2O) exists on other planets ..
long story short, the talking was driven toward the topic of "thinking" and "analyzing" things one learn and read and see ..
at that moment, i realized how our school text books are "screwed" from that perspective ..
you know, they all bragging about how mind provoking for the student, how much those new modified text books are mind blowing .. you know what?! they are not!!!
if anyone take a look at those text books, you'll realize how suppressing  they are to the mind ..
they just direct you to look into the internet for all the answers you are looking for ..
not even the slightest hint to make out answer, analyze from the parameters one have to reach the target .. the goal .. the knowledge ..

its really sad ..

you know what the thing is? its always been like this, the schools, those institutions who took on their shoulders the responsibility to rise generation, is making it harder for those generations to be proper thinkers, they are preparing them to be just knowledge receivers and consumers ..
and the outside community isn't helping also ..

i don't know people .. what do u think?

  1. Echo Pasha, Welcome back and waiting for your new stuff.

I would like to dump my thoughts here. But, due to my lack of knowledge of what's going on in the schools and curricula/textbooks, my thoughts may be outdated and may look nonsense.

  2. Only in Jordan schools has nothing to do with college and college has nothing to do with real life !

Anyway, our textbooks are screwed long time ago, they designed to spoon feed you, to accept the fact as a fact no more no less , creativity and thinking is not welcomed , and even if the student started to think creativly he will be suppressed by the lack of guidance, his books, and the environment around him , this is really sad reality m oour brain is no more than saving machine not thinking !

  4. As if all Jordanian students have access to Internet!
But the solution starts in your hands and in the hands of every teacher aware of how dangerous this is,every chance you give the student to express his creative questions or answers is a step towards changing their mentality.

  5. Dear Saleh,
Come on man!! your thoughts are always welcomed ..
ya zalameh, enta zalameh ba3tabroh mofakker ..
    7atta law kanat ma3lomatak gademeh ..
ur thoughts always add something important to the whole thing ..

welcome to my humble blog Dr. w7l
in fact, if you take a look at most of the textbooks in the world (advanced or growing societies) they aren't that much different,
the thing is, difference is made with the methods practiced in the advanced countries ..
you know, they provide knowledge and thinking methods in a way to provoke the minds of their students in the direction they was categorized into ..

as for universities .. its another story ..
the subject contents are taught and practiced in synchronization with the limitations and resources available ..

  6. loooool, saleh ..

    rain,
would love to meet the kinda of teacher you described ..
i've been in the MoE for four years now .. and i haven't met one who actually cares .. and have the means to make a change ..

as for a solution, i'll start with the media, you hide the provoking questions beneath the daily programs the TV's and radios broadcast ..
then u change a minor thing in the educational system, u make a space every week or so for an hour or two to open a "fruitful" discussion with someone knows what he is doing ..
i think, changing the mentality of the kids isn't that hard they are still growing mentally after all, its changing the mentality of the elder to accept the idea, and start adopting and creating the solutions ..

  7. you reminded me of a movie called "Will Hunting" its a good movie and discusses this issue,, ya3ne to a certain degree..... in the movie there is a part where the main character "will Hunting" confronts a post graduate student who just started bragging and reciting what he read in text books.. I love that part when Will replies back!
